Thermal Testing

Thermal testing is now being requested by several insurance companies as it will significantly reduce the risk of electrical fires. It also provides a quick and efficient method of finding electrical circuits and components that are likely to fail. A distinct advantage of this non-contact technique is that surveys are carried out under normal working conditions, which therefore involves minimal interference to the day-to-day running of the business.

This involves testing electrical installations or equipment for possible dangerous electrical problems throughout an electrical installation and is essential for preventive and predictive maintenance. Thermal testing can pinpoint any potential problems in cables, distribution boards, transformers, switchgear, plant rooms and other related items.

Thermal testing will highlight temperature differences caused by changes from normal operating conditions, identifying hotspots caused by a developing problem.

Some possible defects which could be located whilst carrying out the inspection -

• Overloading a particular circuit or distribution board.
